Getting the best view. . .
This site is best viewed "full screen," at the standard 640x480 resolution,
with as many toolbars and address location boxes, etc., turned off as
possible. How to do this and recommended font sizes follow this section. But
first, let's compare your browser's view with the intended view....
This is how it looks on your browser:
Fall, from the series
by Richard G. Mills
Those Autumn Leaves...Vrroommm-vrroommm!
My first house of my own. My first autumn
with my own lawn. I tried raking the leaves. And "Boy," I
thought to myself, "this could get boring real fast!"
Now, I didn't go out and buy the most
expensive one I could find. I didn't even buy the
This is how it should look (not in Mosaic, unfortuantely):
Please note: If "how it looks" fills the width of your screen but
"how it should look" does not fill the width of your screen, your
monitor is probably not set to 640x480, and many of the backgrounds and
graphics will appear completely off-centered. (An attempt will be made
to correct this in future revisions!) If you do not reset your monitor
resolution to 640x480, please remember that "what you get" is not "what you're
supposed to see"!
If you're satisfied with the look of your version of the above excerpt, you
can go back to the home page now or go
directly to the Table of Contents. Otherwise,
please continue...
When this site was originally constructed, an attempt was made to make these
pages equally viewable in a basic browser, such as CompuServe's bare-bones
Mosaic, and an advanced browser, such as Netscape Navigator 3.x -- as well as
in Windows and on a Mac. (Although these pages are created in Windows, the
first revision was viewed on a Netscape/Mac with no problems.) However, since
that time, even CompuServe has abandoned its own Mosaic (in favor of
Microsoft's Internet Explorer), and this site is being revised with Netscape
Navigator (and, to a lesser degree, IExplorer) as the favored browser.
For best layout viewing: choose a 12pt. "normal" (Mosaic)
"proportional" (Netscape) font size, and don't override document
colors (choosing "always use my colors, overriding document" both
defeats the purpose of the extensive layout design of this and the second
Think Mills site and may result in unreadable links and text).
In Windows, Times New Roman 12pt is highly recommended (this was/is
probably your original default style and size, anyhow).
Headline sizes for Mosaic have been kept to their orignal default sizes (Times
New Roman h1: 24, h2: 22, h3: 18, h4: 16, h5: 14, and h6: 13-bold). Netscape
Navigator 3.0 default heads tend to be smaller (and, at the time of the
original layout, unchangeable); and, therefore, h6 has been avoided, and h5,
rarely used.
If you need to change/check font sizes and don't know where to look, try--
In Mosaic: View, Options..., Fonts
(and check especially that "Normal" is set to 12pt)
In Netscape 3+: Options, General Preferences...,
Fonts (and check especially that "Proportional" is set to 12pt)
In Netscape 4+: Edit; Preferences...;
if there's a plus sign before "Appearance," click it; and click
"Fonts" (and check especially that "Variable Width Font"
is set to 12pt) (Font sizes can also be increased/decreased from the
View menu.)
In IExplorer: View, Options,
Appearance tab, look under Page. (Font sizes can also be
increased/decreased from the Toolbar buttons.)
To view full-screen, In Mosaic: Click View, and click
Kiosk Mode (or use [Ctrl][K])
In Netscape 3+: Click Options, and click off Show
Toolbar, Show Location, Show Directory
Buttons if "checked" on
In Netscape 4+: Click View, and click Hide
Navigation Toolbar, Hide Location Toolbar
(optional?), Hide Personal Toolbar if available (if these read
"Show", instead of "Hide", they're already off)
In IExplorer: Click View, and click off
Toolbar, Address Bar, and (maybe) Status
Bar if "checked" on
